Demographics

In 2009, there were 11,679 licensed drivers in Portales. Of these, there were 5,822 females and 5,857 males. The population of Portales was 12,182. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 261, yielding a crash rate of 21 per thousand people (total number of crashes 261 divided by total population 12,182 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2006 to 2008 the number of crashes has shown a downward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have also shown a downward trend from 2004 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has increased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has decreased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has not changed since last year. There were no fatalities in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2009. Of these intersections, two involved 2nd St, Main Ave and 1st St.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 35 people convicted of DWI in Portales, 80 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 28 divided by the total number of people convicted 35 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 61 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Pedestrians resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 45 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 28 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 71 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Other and Failing to yield. There was one fatal crash in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crash was Failing to yield.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 54 percent of drivers in crashes and 88 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 50 percent of licensed drivers in Portales. Three pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Portales. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Portales 25 percent (4 of 16) were under 21.
