Demographics

In 2009, there were 79,436 licensed drivers in San Juan County. Of these, there were 40,248 females and 39,188 males. The population of San Juan County was 124,131. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 2,619, yielding a crash rate of 21 per thousand people (total number of crashes 2,619 divided by total population 124,131 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2000 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown no trend. Fatal and injury crashes have also shown no trend from 2000 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has increased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has increased since last year.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 1,008 people convicted of DWI in San Juan County, 65 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 656 divided by the total number of people convicted 1,008 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 63 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Other objects, Overturns, Parked vehicles, Fixed objects, Pedestrians and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 38 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 34 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 70 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Other and Following too close. There were 15 fatal crashes in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 54 percent of drivers in crashes and 73 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 49 percent of licensed drivers in San Juan County. 30 pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" and one Young Adult were killed in crashes in San Juan County. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in San Juan County 15 percent (30 of 199) were under 21.
