Demographics

In 2009, there were 18,825 licensed drivers in San Miguel County. Of these, there were 9,673 females and 9,152 males. The population of San Miguel County was 28,323. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 448, yielding a crash rate of 16 per thousand people (total number of crashes 448 divided by total population 28,323 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2007 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown an upward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown no trend from 2000 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has also decreased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has decreased since last year.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 193 people convicted of DWI in San Miguel County, 61 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 117 divided by the total number of people convicted 193 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 52 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Overturns, Pedestrians and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 47 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 25 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 65 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Failing to yield and Other. There were seven fatal crashes in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 55 percent of drivers in crashes and 68 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 49 percent of licensed drivers in San Miguel County. Five pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" and two Young Adults were killed in crashes in San Miguel County. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in San Miguel County 29 percent (8 of 28) were under 21.
