Demographics

In 2009, there were 113,248 licensed drivers in Santa Fe County. Of these, there were 57,100 females and 56,148 males. The population of Santa Fe County was 147,532. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 3,511, yielding a crash rate of 24 per thousand people (total number of crashes 3,511 divided by total population 147,532 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2007 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown a downward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have also shown a downward trend from 2004 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has also decreased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has increased since last year.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 532 people convicted of DWI in Santa Fe County, 72 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 384 divided by the total number of people convicted 532 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 75 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Overturns, Fixed objects, Pedestrians and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 50 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Van/4 WDs accounted for 20 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 70 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Following too close, Driver inattention and Failing to yield. There were 20 fatal crashes in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 55 percent of drivers in crashes and 69 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 50 percent of licensed drivers in Santa Fe County. 41 pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, four "Teenagers" and four Young Adults were killed in crashes in Santa Fe County. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Santa Fe County 11 percent (21 of 185) were under 21.
