Demographics

In 2009, there were 9,522 licensed drivers in Sierra County. Of these, there were 4,630 females and 4,892 males. The population of Sierra County was 12,886. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 246, yielding a crash rate of 19 per thousand people (total number of crashes 246 divided by total population 12,886 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2000 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown no trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown an upward trend from 2005 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has also decreased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has increased since last year.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 65 people convicted of DWI in Sierra County, 66 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 43 divided by the total number of people convicted 65 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 34 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Overturns and Fixed objects resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 39 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 25 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 61 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Other, Driver inattention and Excessive speed. There were seven fatal crashes in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 57 percent of drivers in crashes and 57 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 51 percent of licensed drivers in Sierra County. One pedestrian was involved in a crash in 2009. In 2009, two "Teenagers" and two Young Adults were killed in crashes in Sierra County. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Sierra County 14 percent (2 of 14) were under 21.
