Demographics

In 2009, there were 25,507 licensed drivers in Taos County. Of these, there were 12,902 females and 12,605 males. The population of Taos County was 31,507. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 753, yielding a crash rate of 24 per thousand people (total number of crashes 753 divided by total population 31,507 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2007 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown an upward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown no trend from 2000 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has not changed. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has decreased since last year.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 116 people convicted of DWI in Taos County, 72 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 84 divided by the total number of people convicted 116 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 54 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Overturns, Fixed objects and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 41 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 24 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 63 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The four most common top contributing factors were Other, Driver inattention, Excessive speed and Failing to yield. There were eight fatal crashes in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 59 percent of drivers in crashes and 70 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 49 percent of licensed drivers in Taos County. Five pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" and one Young Adult were killed in crashes in Taos County. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Taos County 11 percent (7 of 61) were under 21.
