Demographics

In 2009, there were 9,097 licensed drivers in Taos. Of these, there were 4,678 females and 4,419 males. The population of Taos was 5,545. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 321, yielding a crash rate of 58 per thousand people (total number of crashes 321 divided by total population 5,545 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2000 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown no trend. Fatal and injury crashes have also shown no trend from 2000 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has not changed. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has decreased since last year. There were no fatalities in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2009. Of these intersections, five involved Paseo Del Pueblo Sur.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 38 people convicted of DWI in Taos, 84 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 32 divided by the total number of people convicted 38 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 75 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Overturns and Fixed objects resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 42 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 24 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 66 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Failing to yield and Following too close. There were three fatal crashes in 2009. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 53 percent of drivers in crashes and 63 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 49 percent of licensed drivers in Taos. Four pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" and one Young Adult were killed in crashes in Taos. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Taos 13 percent (3 of 24) were under 21.
