Demographics

In 2009, there were 5,116 licensed drivers in Truth or Consequences. Of these, there were 2,540 females and 2,576 males. The population of Truth or Consequences was 7,021. The total number of crashes in 2009 was 130, yielding a crash rate of 19 per thousand people (total number of crashes 130 divided by total population 7,021 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 23 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2000 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown no trend. Fatal and injury crashes have also shown no trend from 2000 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has not changed. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has increased since last year. There were no fatalities in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2009. Of these intersections, three involved Date St.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 11 people convicted of DWI in Truth or Consequences, 82 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 9 divided by the total number of people convicted 11 times 100). The corresponding percent for the state is 68.

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 50 percent of all crashes. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 39 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 24 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 56 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Failing to yield and Other. There were no fatal crashes in 2009.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 52 percent of drivers in crashes and 83 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 50 percent of licensed drivers in Truth or Consequences. One pedestrian was involved in a crash in 2009. In 2009, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Truth or Consequences. Statewide 14 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Truth or Consequences 17 percent (1 of 6) were under 21.
