Demographics

In 2010, there were 15,052 licensed drivers in Gallup. Of these, there were 7,958 females and 7,094 males. The population of Gallup was 21,678. The total number of crashes in 2010 was 760, yielding a crash rate of 35 per thousand people (total number of crashes 760 divided by total population 21,678 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 21 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2007 to 2010 the number of crashes has shown an upward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown a downward trend from 2006 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has increased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has decreased since last year. There were no fatalities in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2010. Of these intersections, four involved Munoz Dr.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 171 people convicted of DWI in Gallup, 41 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 70 divided by the total number of people convicted 171 times 100).

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles was the most common class, accounting for 74 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 43 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 31 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 77 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Other, Following too close and Failing to yield. There were two fatal crashes in 2010. The top contributing factors for the fatal crashes were Excessive speed and Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 53 percent of drivers in crashes. They account for 47 percent of licensed drivers in Gallup. Five pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2010. In 2010, one "Teenager" and no Young Adults were killed in crashes in Gallup. Statewide 11 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Gallup 10 percent (5 of 50) were under 21.
