Demographics

In 2010, there were 92,389 licensed drivers in Las Cruces. Of these, there were 47,209 females and 45,180 males. The population of Las Cruces was 97,618. The total number of crashes in 2010 was 3,246, yielding a crash rate of 33 per thousand people (total number of crashes 3,246 divided by total population 97,618 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 21 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2008 to 2010 the number of crashes has shown an upward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown a downward trend from 2006 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has increased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has decreased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has increased since last year. There were no fatalities in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2010. Of these intersections, three involved Main St.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 315 people convicted of DWI in Las Cruces, 57 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 178 divided by the total number of people convicted 315 times 100).

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles was the most common class, accounting for 78 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Pedalcyclists, Other non-collisions, Overturns, Pedestrians and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 55 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 18 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 71 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Other and Failing to yield. There were six fatal crashes in 2010. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 51 percent of drivers in crashes. They account for 49 percent of licensed drivers in Las Cruces. 31 pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2010. In 2010, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Las Cruces. Statewide 11 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Las Cruces 9 percent (11 of 123) were under 21.
