Demographics

In 2010, there were 12,665 licensed drivers in Las Vegas. Of these, there were 6,646 females and 6,019 males. The population of Las Vegas was 13,753. The total number of crashes in 2010 was 305, yielding a crash rate of 22 per thousand people (total number of crashes 305 divided by total population 13,753 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 21 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2007 to 2009 the number of crashes has shown an upward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown a downward trend from 2008 to 2010. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has not changed. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has not changed since last year. There was one fatality in the 7 intersections with the most crashes in 2010. Of these intersections, three involved Mills Ave.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 43 people convicted of DWI in Las Vegas, 47 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 20 divided by the total number of people convicted 43 times 100).

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles was the most common class, accounting for 76 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Fixed objects and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 46 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 27 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 71 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Driver inattention, Other and Failing to yield. There were two fatal crashes in 2010. The top contributing factors for the fatal crashes were Red light running and Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 52 percent of drivers in crashes. They account for 48 percent of licensed drivers in Las Vegas. Two pedestrians were involved in crashes in 2010. In 2010, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Las Vegas. Statewide 11 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Las Vegas 10 percent (2 of 20) were under 21.
