Demographics

In 2010, there were 9,493 licensed drivers in Sierra County. Of these, there were 4,636 females and 4,857 males. The population of Sierra County was 12,026. The total number of crashes in 2010 was 181, yielding a crash rate of 15 per thousand people (total number of crashes 181 divided by total population 12,026 times 1,000). The corresponding rate for the state was 21 per thousand people.

General Crash Information

From 2008 to 2010 the number of crashes has shown a downward trend. Fatal and injury crashes have shown an upward trend from 2005 to 2009. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Visible injuries has decreased since last year, while belt usage involving Incapacitating injuries has also decreased. Belt usage (as a percentage) involving Fatalities has decreased since last year.

Alcohol-related Crash Information

Information about alcohol-involved crashes is included in all sections of this report. Of the 76 people convicted of DWI in Sierra County, 63 percent were first-time DWI convictions (number of first convictions 48 divided by the total number of people convicted 76 times 100).

Crash Specifics

Crashes involving Other vehicles were the most common class, accounting for 36 percent of all crashes. Crashes involving Fixed objects and Other vehicles resulted in fatalities. Passenger cars were the vehicle type most often involved in crashes, accounting for 34 percent of all vehicles in crashes. Pickups accounted for 32 percent of vehicles involved in crashes. Together these two vehicle types comprised 58 percent of the vehicles involved in injury crashes. The three most common top contributing factors were Other, Driver inattention and Excessive speed. There were three fatal crashes in 2010. The top contributing factor for the fatal crashes was Alcohol involvement.

People in Crashes

Overall, males were 61 percent of drivers in crashes and 82 percent of drivers in alcohol-involved crashes. They account for 51 percent of licensed drivers in Sierra County. One pedestrian was involved in a crash in 2010. In 2010, no "Teenagers" or Young Adults were killed in crashes in Sierra County. Statewide 11 percent of alcohol-involved drivers were under 21; in Sierra County 9 percent (1 of 11) were under 21.
