Student Employment

To be eligible for student employment at DGR you must must be a UNM or CNM student in a degree-granting program. You need to be registered for a minimum of six (6) credit hours (half-time) during the fall and spring semesters. Student employees do not need to be registered for classes during the summer sessions. CNM Students must be work study qualified to work at UNM.

We expect students to work a minimum of 15 hours per week. In addition, DGR prefers students who will be at UNM or CNM for at least one more year before graduation. A large portion of a new students work involves training that is provided by DGR staff and other students. It usually takes several months before a student becomes familar with the computing facilities DGR uses and the nature of the data in the projects that are being conducted.

PLEASE NOTE: DGR is an applied research and public service organization at UNM and not an academic department. We do not have graduate student assistantships (GA, RA, and PA, etc.) like those available in the academic departments. Our student employment positions are mostly for undergraduate students who will be available to work for a year or more. Students can earn internship credit (available from certain academic departments). Graduate students without significant work experience will usually be hired in the same student employment positions as undergraduates. Graduate students that have significant experience can apply for the on-call staff positions that will be posted by UNM's Department of Human Resources ( click here for job openings).

Student positions available at DGR are listed below. Hiring is usually done at the beginning of each semester for those positions marked as OPEN. These OPEN positions may also posted at UNM Student Employment once there are vacancies. You may click here for the job descriptions or click on the position below for the current job posting (as a PDF). They may also be posted on various departmental bulletin boards throughout UNM.

We are currently accepting applications for OPEN positions. The Computer Aide position requires an academic background in statistics and data analysis (at least some completed coursework). The GIS Specialist position requires a background in an academic discipline that routinely uses GIS and some completed GIS courses. There are a limited number of student positions open at this time. We usually collect applications, review them, and arrange an interview with ONLY the most qualified applicants.
