APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION

Application for graduate study must include the materials identified below. If you need more information about the application process, contact the program office at 505-277-4535 or divbse.unm.edu.

Please visit the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) (Click on the "Apply Now" link for online application information.)

    1.                  A completed OGS online application and all required registration information

    2.                  $50.00 Application Fee

    3.                  Two official transcripts of all prior undergraduate and graduate course work; a minimum GPA of 3.0 as an undergraduate and 3.3 as a graduate is required.

    4.                  Interviews with a minimum of three faculty members who have primary appointments in the program (see list of program faculty).  Interviews will be conducted in person for local applicants and by phone for out of town applicants.  The applicant is responsible for making the arrangements for these individual interviews (see the list of program faculty for telephone numbers and e-mail addresses) and for attaching a list of the faculty interviewed to the letter of intent.  The interviews are a very important component of the application process, providing an opportunity for advising and the determination of the match between student and faculty interests and expertise.  International students may conduct interviews with faculty members via email.

    5.                  Send to the program office/Simpson Hall: A letter of intent describing the applicant’s rationale for pursuing the degree, the congruence between the applicant’s professional goals and our program and faculty, and the names of the faculty with which the applicant has interviewed (see #4 above).

    6.                  Send to the program office/Simpson Hall: A minimum of three letters of recommendation describing the applicant’s academic and professional strengths and accomplishments.  More than three letters are suggested to assure the arrival of three letters by the application deadline date.

    7.                  Official score transcripts for the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude (GRE) taken within the past 7 years.  The Miller’s Analogy Test  (MAT) is acceptable as an alternate examination.

    8.                  For students seeking the Ph.D., a sample of written work that provides evidence of the candidate's research competence and potential. Examples include a completed master's thesis, a published article, or a conference paper. A research proposal or a review of research literature that you have written for a graduate course would also be acceptable. Send writing samples to the program office/Simpson Hall.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all application materials have been received and are on file in Simpson Hall by the appropriate deadlines. Applicants may check on the status of their application by calling the program office, 505-277-4535 or via email: divbse@unm.edu.

Applicants will be notified of the faculty’s preliminary decision on the application after its review. Final admission occurs only after action by the Office of Graduate Studies.

Once admitted to the program, it is the student’s responsibility to make sure that the program office has up to date addresses (home and email) and telephone numbers.  The program coordinator typically communicates important information (e.g., opportunities for graduate assistantships, deadlines for annual review, topic course offerings, etc) via e-mail.  For this reason, all Educational Psychology graduate students are expected to have an e-mail account. Upon admission, students will be added to EDPSY-L, the listserv for EDPSY faculty, majors and minors.
