Highlights of the MSME Plan II Coursework-Only Track

ME Faculty recently approved  a new "Coursework-Only" MSME Track (as part of Plan II), intended for working professionals.

Some of the highlights of this Track are as follows:

  • Students will take 10 regular courses (i.e., 30 credit hrs).

  • Financial Aid (RA/TA/PA) is not available to the students pursuing this Track, since it is intended for working professionals.

  • Seminar courses are not required.

  • Students will take a 2-hr (minimum) ME 551 (or 552) “Problems” course.

The main features of the ME 551 (or 552) “Problems” course are as follows:

  • This course is meant to be an independent study type of work, with no (or minimum) supervision. The subject of the study is chosen by the student. The study can be a work-related project, creative work (based on student’s interest), literature surveys (reviews) of a technical subject, design, code development, or a similar scholarly activity.

  • The student will write a report on the subject of the study. No oral presentation will be required. A committee of three (3) ME faculty members will examine the report during a scheduled meeting. This activity will become the Master’s Exam (which is a UNM capstone requirement). Both technical and written aspects of the report will be evaluated. The student may choose, by mutual agreement, a faculty member to serve as the Chair of this committee. (In that case, this faculty member may recommend the other two members). Otherwise, the ME Graduate Director may serve as the Chair of this committee.

In contrast, the Research Track (of Plan II) requires two semesters of the Seminar course. Also, the project work is a more structured activity, with a much closer supervision of a faculty member; it will require an oral presentation as well as a written report.
