Economics majors are very well suited and prepared for advanced degrees in Economics, Business,
Law, and Medical School. Many law school representatives believe that Economics is one of the
best and most desired pre-law majors because of the analytical training and logical thinking
involved in this discipline. The wide ranges of theoretical, analytical, and empirical courses
offered ensure that our undergraduate program equips students with the skills to successfully
pursue advanced degrees in Economics. |

Economics Honors Program The Honors Program provides Economics majors with the opportunity for advanced study in a seminar format with faculty supervision of seminar papers and an honors thesis. Its objective is to expose the student to the problems of formulating and conducting economic analysis and to encourage the student to use his or her training in original research. The Honors Program is a 7 credit hour program, culminating in the completion of a senior thesis. Students must complete ECON 497 or 498 (Reading for Honors) and ECON 499 (Senior Honors Thesis). This work in the honors courses is in addition to the requirements for an Economics major. To be eligible, a student must have an overall GPA of 3.2. Requests for admission to the Honors program should consist of a letter of intent, an unofficial transcript, and the name of the faculty member who will direct the honors program study. Ideally, requests for consideration are submitted to the department chair at the end of the sophomore year or during first junior semester. Following chair's approval, the student may then register for ECON 497 or 498. Association of Undergraduate Economic Students The economics department has an active undergraduate club known as the Association of Undergraduate Economics Students (AUES). Membership is free and open to all economics majors. The department also has an active chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE), the International Honor Society. Information on ODE can be obtained by contacting Michael Hand at mhand@unm.edu Course Materials and Information This is a page that lists course web site links.
