The purpose of an internship is to provide school-based administrative experience in which the student has an opportunity to learn how academic knowledge can be applied in the educational/school setting. The intern receives support and direction from the practitioner-mentor and a field supervisor.
The internship is a two-semester requirement (6 credit hours) to be completed during the fall and spring semesters. Internship experiences are planned to include beginning of the year to end of the year leadership responsibilities. |

The intern is subject to the authority, rules, and regulations of the sponsoring school district.
Effective spring semester 2005, no student who is also completing an internship will take more than nine (9) credit hours (including internship credit) during with the fall or spring semester without an approved petition explaining the reasons for the overload.
A. The following conditions must be met:
1. Student must have completed 12 hours of course work with UNM Educational Leadership faculty. On rare occasions, no more than 3 hours of transfer coursework may be applied toward this minimum.
2. Student must maintain a grade average of 3.3 or higher in core course requirements.
3. Students not demonstrating appropriate and expected progress on:
- Educational Leadership national standards and state competencies
- A student will be notified by his/her advisor if there is lack of progress. The student must meet the expectations outlined in the notification prior to internship entry.
- Successful completion of the Educational Leadership Program technology examination (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
4. Determination regarding eligibility for the internship will be made at the
same time that decisions are made about program admissions.
5. Important: The application deadline for an internship is July 1.
B. Student will complete the Internship Application form and sign the Internship Agreement form.
C. Any deviation from these requirements must receive the prior approval of the assigned faculty advisor.
