Ed.D. in Educational Leadership
Application Procedures for Admission

The application process involves two steps:

STEP 1:  Completing a UNM Graduate Admissions Packet
STEP 2:  Completing an Educational Leadership Program Packet

The Ed.D. in Educational Leadership is a 48-hour program designed for active, high-achieving educators seeking to develop a more profound understanding of leadership for learning and transformation.  Generally, minimum requirements for admission include experiences as an educational leader, evidence of strong academic potential, ability to work cooperatively in a community of learners, and availability to pursue summer and academic year study.  In addition, applicants must hold a master’s degree and submit GRE General Test scores for consideration.

Please be aware that the program is considering structural changes to respond to students’ desires for more curricular and scheduling flexibility.  If we were to initiate changes, they would begin in Fall 2008, but coursework would still be designed to accommodate full-time professionals and still be offered on weekends in the fall and spring.  It is possible that the changes would involve meeting two Saturdays a month instead of one Friday to Sunday meeting a month.  Final decisions on any program revisions will be made by mid-January 2007, before applications are due.  Please contact Dr. Patsy Boverie, doctoral Coordinator, for more information.

IMPORTANT:

  • Both packets are due to the appropriate offices by February 1.  Packets MUST be complete by the deadline to be considered for admission.
  • Official transcripts are required for each packet.  Please order these transcripts early, and have them sent to the appropriate offices.

STEP 1:  Graduate Admissions Packet

Admissions packets are available at www.unm.edu/grad/admissions.html. Follow directions for submitting the application.  NOTE:  The Educational Leadership Program strongly prefers that you choose the online application as it greatly facilitates the admissions process.

STEP 2:  Educational Leadership Program Packet

Please submit the following materials directly to the Educational Leadership Program.

1. Letter of Intent (3 pages)
Tell us about yourself as a person, learner, and leader and how this program can help you develop in these areas.  This statement might include such information as

  • Your educational experience and goals
  • Your professional background and goals
  • Your personal development
  • Links between your personal, professional, and educational development
  • Connections between your personal and professional goals and what you see as the mission of this program

2.   Professional Biographical Form

Download the Professional Biographical Form

3.   Letters of Recommendation
Submit three letters of recommendation using the form available at http://www.unm.edu/grad/eforms/Recommend.doc.  It is helpful if at least one letter is from a supervisor and one is from someone who can address your potential for academic success.

GRE General Test Scores

You should go to www.gre.org/cbttest.html to register and take the GRE General Test.  If you have previously taken the GRE, and it is no more than 5 years old, you may request that those scores be submitted to Educational Leadership.

Letter of Agreement

Because the program is designed for professionals who work full time, it is important that applicants agree to attend full-time summer coursework in July and weekend coursework in the fall and spring. Please return the attached Letter of Agreement to Educational Leadership.

Transcripts

You need to submit one official transcript from each college or university you have attended just as you did for the Graduate Admissions Packet, but send this set directly to Educational Leadership.  Admissions will not forward us the transcripts.

Further Selection Processes:

In early March, on the basis of application quality, select candidates will be invited to campus during the week of March 26th.  If invited, you will present an analytic writing sample, produce an on-the-spot writing sample, and participate in an interview.  Final decisions for admission will be made by late April.
