Catalog Descriptions for Spanish Courses Offered at UNM-Valencia

SPAN 101: Elementary Spanish. (3) Beginning Spanish for students with no previous exposure to Spanish. Development of all four language skills, with emphasis on listening, comprehension and speaking. Co-requisite SPAN 103.


SPAN 102: Elementary Spanish. (3) Beginning Spanish for students who have completed SPAN 101 or equivalent. Continued development of four skills with emphasis on listening and speaking. Co-requisite SPAN 104.


NOTE: Special sections of SPAN 101 and 102 for bilingual students may be offered. If and when they are, students who either speak Spanish or who understand the language will be required to enroll in these special sections. The Spanish placement test is strongly recommended to ensure a comfortable learning environment for all students.


SPAN 103-104: Elementary Spanish Conversation. (1) Required co-requisite lab for SPAN 101 and 102, offering supplemental resources. Offered on a CR/NC grading basis only. 


SPAN 201: Intermediate Spanish. (3) Spanish for students who have completed SPAN 102 or equivalent. Reviews grammar and expands conversational skills with the further development of reading and writing.


SPAN 202: Intermediate Spanish. (3) Spanish for students who have completed SPAN 201 or equivalent. Continued conversational activities with emphasis on reading and writing skills.

Program Focus
All four language skills—with an emphasis upon listening, comprehension, and speaking in 101 and 102 and upon reading and writing in 201 and 202.

Overview of Courses and Course Requirements
Using Dos Mundos as the core text throughout the sequence, the minimum requirements are provided below. In order for students to begin the following course in the sequence successfully, each instructor must make every effort to ensure that students complete the chapters indicated.

Spanish 101—Chapters A,B, C, 1,2,3. With brief oral presentations from students, short (minimum of 25 words) written paragraphs, and tests on the chapters.

Spanish 102—Chapters 4,5,6,7,8,9. With oral presentations from students, 50-word written paragraphs, and tests on the chapters.

Spanish 201—Chapters 10,11,12,13. With oral presentations from students, 150-word written paragraphs (by the end of the course), reading supplements to enhance reading and writing ability and overall knowledge, and tests on the chapters, writing assignments, and projects.

Spanish 202—Chapters 14,15,and 16. With oral presentations from students, 200-word written paragraphs (by the end of the semester), and reading supplements to enhance reading and writing ability and overall knowledge, and tests on the chapters, writing assignments, and projects.

Spanish Lab

A co-requisite one-hour lab for Spanish 101 and 102 is offered on an ARR basis.  In addition to other supplemental lab assignments, students will be able to fulfill lab requirements in the Spanish Language Lab (LRC 172).  The lab offers interactive computers with Internet access, listening stations for use with CDs and audio cassette tapes, and a TV/VCR for viewing video tapes.  All lab materials are kept on reserve in the Library.
