English 296.001 Earlier American Literature

Earlier American Literature is a general survey covering the period from the 16 th century through the Civil War. We will examine fiction, poetry, and non-fiction prose; artistic and literary movements; and literary criticism and theory. The textbooks will be The Heath Anthology of American Literature, 5 th edition, Volumes A and B.

The primary objective of this course is to gain knowledge of texts and authors, both from the traditional canon and emerging canons. Assigned readings will balance "dead white guys" with the texts of women and minorites. We will explore these questions: What is "American," literature? How does one integrate the many aspects of one’s identity while being American? How much of one's identity is externally defined?

Course requirements include active participation in class and small group discussions, quizzes and in-class writing exercises, two exams, and two papers. Attendance is mandatory.
