Expository Writing

Science Writing

Science writing is one of the fastest growing genres of popular writing today. In this class, we will examine science writing as a genre and the principles underlying it in order to come to some common consensus about how to define this fascinating genre and how it works. What kinds of writing can be called science writing? What makes effective science writing? How are social concerns addressed by science writing, and what do science writers do to address these concerns? What stylistic and rhetorical conventions do science writers use to make their writing effective for their audience. How do audiences respond to different types of science writing, and how do writers tailor their writing to fit different audiences? We will also address the place of ethics in science writing. Whenever possible, students will be given the opportunity to research and write about their own interests. Texts will include The Mismeasure of Man, by Stephen Jay Gould, A Natural History of the Senses, by Diane Ackerman, the anthology Best American Science Writing 2004, and other articles both from academic journals and popular press.

Work in this class will consist of two essays and a longer research essay; weekly short response papers; required weekly discussion topics; and some short research assignments.
