Intro to Creative Writing: Fiction

Crafting the Short Story:

There are all kinds of stories and all kinds of storytellers. The published stories we'll be reading in class are good, some are even excellent, but they are only a minute sample of what has been done and what can be done. Each of you - though you may not realize it yet - have important stories to tell, characters whose voices want to be heard. Now is the time to immerse yourself in stories and create some of your own.

This class will provide an opportunity for students to generate their own work through writing experiments, in class writing assignments and developing a short story. The creative writing process can be both mystifying and intimidating and we will work toward building confidence and skills by learning about the elements of craft including: character, point of view, plot, narrative structure, image pattern, symbol, diction and theme. To see how these elements work together, we will be reading contemporary authors such as: Alice Munro, Richard Ford, Sherman Alexie, Robert Olen Butler, Joyce Carol Oates, and many others.
