English 222.001:
Intro to Creative Writing: Poetry
This course is designed for writers who are serious about developing their poetic skills. In it, you will read much poetry by published poets, because successful poets read and react to other poets' work, and will write a number of poems. In addition, each student will write and present a report on an established poet, as well as write other prose responses, and, of course, poems. You will also study how to effectively revise and orally present poems.
This class is largely concerned with the issue of craft. That is, you will carefully examine how successful poetry is constructed, and then will develop strategies for crafting your own poems to make them more successful. By the end of this class, you will have read and responded to the poems of published writers, workshopped several of your poems, responded in workshop to other students' poems, and learned how to identify and use such important aspects of poetry as metaphor, image, rhythm, form and voice.
