Traditional Grammar

During this class you will learn how to analyze and apply grammar according to a descriptive system derived from linguistics, transformational grammar, and other contemporary language studies. We will make constant reference to traditional grammar. To give context to our analysis and application of grammatical principles, we will read and discuss various essays that focus on 'hot button' issues relating to grammar and usage. While it might appear that grammar is a dull and arduous study, we'll find out why one popular book on grammar continues to be on the best seller list week after week, and why sentence structure and usage issues get some people so riled up they can't see straight.
