English 240.003:
Traditional Grammar
Edna St. Vincent Millay thought that Euclid's geometry looked on beauty bare. To look on beauty bare in language, we need to know grammar's elements - its absolutes, interjections, adverbials, determiners, gerunds, participles, and more. In this course we'll look closely at the elements and structural patterns of English grammar. Along the way, we'll learn the art of diagramming sentences, to get that art's crisp view of beauty bare in English prose and poetry. We'll learn to turn a phrase, to transform basic sentence patterns, to modify, coordinate, parallel, and juxtapose. Requirements include exercises, quizzes, four take home tests, and some extra credit opportunities.
Texts include Understanding English Grammar by Kolln and Funk, Sixth Edition, and a course packet.
