The Analysis of Literature

In this course you lay the groundwork for all of the other literature courses you’ll take. You learn what constitutes good literary criticism and scholarship, how both fit into society, how to do literary research, the down and dirty of using the library, and how to use all of the above to produce good, solid academic argument. In between, you’ll be introduced to basic terms and approaches to the major literary genres, all with an emphasis on Southwestern literature. I teach this course as a skills course. Think of English 102 on steroids and with a literary focus. Requirements include: a final portfolio, frequent writing, participation in class and online discussion, rhetorical clarity, and a flexible mind.
