Writing Medical Narratives

This course will focus on the writing of medical narratives. In class, we will discuss the formal elements of medical narratives, strategies for crafting effective medical narratives and writing clear, graceful prose, intangible writers' qualities such as empathy, responsibility, and respectfulness, and potential values of writing and publishing medical narratives. We will also read and discuss published medical narratives by various writers.
Students will be required to write regularly in a writer's notebook, recording, developing, and reflecting on their impressions, ideas, and readings in order to develop narrative competence and a reflective practice. Students will also be required to write a critique of a published medical narrative, and three medical narratives, to participate in critiquing work by their peers in class, and to give a formal oral presentation of a piece of their work.
