English 322.002:
Creative Writing: Poetry
What makes a poem powerful? How can we create poems with physical, emotional and spiritual presence? In this intermediate poetry course we'll explore such questions by reading great poems, taking a deeper look at the essential elements of poetry--line, sentence, image, rhythm, music, etc . - and applying the insights and techniques we glean to our own writing. This is a hands-on course. We'll do a lot of writing exercises in class to help you generate raw material and find your terrain as a poet, and we'll read and discuss each other's work, with a focus on providing constructive, useful feedback. We'll work with a variety of forms (e.g. elegies, praise songs, prose poems, villanelles), but once you complete each assignment, you'll be free to rewrite your poem in any form you desire. You will create a minimum of eight new poems during the course, and work on revising these poems to learn firsthand the inestimable value of critique and revision. You will also write two short essays, and keep a writing folder which will include your poems, writing exercises, and responses to readings, audiotapes, and videos.
