English 450/550: American English and its Literature
American English is a unique "branch" of the English language that is, in turn, composed of several distinctive "sub-branches" or varieties. The class covers topics including an analysis of the historical development of American English and the way in which such recognizable varieties as "standard American English," "Black English," "Spanglish," etc., have evolved; the issues of linguistic imposition, status, power, and domination; the drive for not just a "national" language but an "official" U.S. language of the U.S.; and survey of dialect literature including excerpts from Uncle Tom's Cabin, Huckleberry Finn, The Hoosier Schoolmaster, The Conjure Woman and Other Tales; English Literature and the Other Languages as well as poets, nonfiction writers, and contemporary dialect writers.
