Online & Hybrid Courses

The English Department offers a number of fully online and hybrid courses each semester.

Online Courses are taught fully online using WebCT. Students access course content, communicate with the instructor and other students, submit assignments, and take quizzes or exams using a variety of tools found in WebCT.

An online course functions much like a standard classroom course, following a weekly schedule of assignments. Therefore as an online student, you need to login to WebCT several times a week to be successful. However, you can participate at any time of day and choose where to participate… at the library, at home, or anywhere you have Internet access. Note: some online courses may schedule activities such as chats, face-to-face meetings, and/or proctored exams. Please check the specific course description for information on these requirements.

Hybrid Courses are taught half in the classroom and half online using WebCT. Each week during the semester, students must attend face-to-face class instruction and also login to their online hybrid course several times to do additional work. For example: your class may be scheduled to meet on Tuesday from 9:30 am until 10:45 am with the remainder of that week's work done online using WebCT.

Hybrid courses are designed for students interested in replacing some on-campus time with other online study but who still want to maintain personal contact with their instructor and other students. Hybrid courses provide students with flexibility but require that students engage actively in learning, both in the classroom and online. For some students this means they will do more work in a hybrid than they would in a standard course.

The courses offered each semester varies, but courses offered online or as hybrid might include:

  • English 102: Analysis and Argument (online and hybrid)
  • English 219: Technical and Professional Writing (online and hybrid)
  • English 220: Expository Writing (online and hybrid)
  • English 364: Native Literature and Rhetoric (online)
  • English 413/215: Scientific and Environmental Writing (online)
  • English 414/514: Documentation (online)
  • English 418/518: Proposal and Grant Writing (online)
