TA Requirements

Academic Progress:

All teaching assistants are expected to demonstrate a pattern of steady progress towards their degree. Progress encompasses such obvious marks as graduate GPA and number of credits earned per semester, as well as faculty members' written evaluations of graduate students. Satisfactory progress also involves meeting program deadlines in a timely fashion. Students must earn at minimum six hours per semester towards their degree requirements and maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0.

Students who fail to maintain this average, who accumulate two or more Incompletes in a semester, or who have one or more Incompletes that have reverted to F, will be given notice that they are not making satisfactory academic progress towards the degree and may lose their eligibility for holding a teaching assistantship.

Adequate Teaching:

Teaching assistants are contractually bound to teach "following the policies of the Freshman English program." These policies are set out in "Policies and Procedures for Core Courses in English " and in the departmental syllabi for English 101 and 102. These documents are available on-line as PDF files, or from the Director of Rhetoric and Writing.

Teaching assistants should meet their classes and office hours reliably, keep accurate and readable records of student work, grade that work fairly and rigorously, and work cooperatively with colleagues.
