Literary Studies - Concentrations
The English Department at UNM offers Bachelor's degrees in concentrations designed to suit the needs of specific students with a variety of educational goals. Each concentration has requirements specific to it. Following are descriptions of those concentrations relevant to the study of literature.
Liberal Arts
The Liberal Arts concentration is for those students who wish to take a broad approach to the study of language and literature. Students may emphasize English or American Literature, and, through the concentration's 18 hours of electives, may give secondary emphasis to world literature, criticism and theory, language, rhetoric, or creative writing.
Pre-Graduate
The Pre-Graduate concentration prepares students for a variety of careers. Representative examples include teaching at the college level, writing and publishing literary criticism, researching literary and historical documents, editing scholarly and modern editions of literary texts, and curating collections of rare books and manuscripts. While primarily designed for those students who intend to pursue graduate study in English or a related field, the concentration offers a rigorous course of study that provides excellent preparation for admission to any graduate or professional school that emphasizes writing, critical thinking, and literary or rhetorical analysis.
Pre-Law
The Pre-Law concentration, primarily designed for those students who plan to attend Law School, will also give students an edge in graduate or professional programs that require expert skill in speaking, writing, critical thinking, and literary or rhetorical analysis.
English-Philosophy
The English-Philosophy major allows for considerable flexibility, aiming to provide students with the opportunity to tailor their program to their own interests, while keeping in sight a broad understanding of the history of English and American Literature and the history of philosophy.
