Jesse Alemán's co-edited book with Shelley Streeby, Empire and the Literature of Sensation, was published in September by Rutgers University Press. The book is a critical edition and reprint of five mid-nineteenth century sensational novelettes about U.S. empire in Mexico and Cuba. Last month, Alemán also saw the publication of his essay, "Colonial Whites and Citizenship Rights: The
Cultural Work of María Amparo Ruiz de Burton's Novels," in Complicating Constructions: Race, Ethnicity, and Hybridity in American Texts (Seattle: U Washington P, 2007). In December, he's slated to present "Somewhat More Free: Race
and the Limits of Academic Freedom" at the MLA in Chicago.

Whitney Myers presented a paper entitled: "Archive Trouble in Albuquerque: On the Limits of Feminist Historiography" at Feminism(s) and Rhetoric(s) in Little Rock, AK on Oct. 4th.
Nicole Gramlich presented her paper “The Role of Sex and Sexuality in Thomas Hardy’s Poetry” at the 2007 Creativity Conference on April 3 rd 2007, and as a result she and her panel won the $300 prize
Cynthia Greenwood presented her paper “Black Horse Wisdom” at the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association conference in Tucson in October 2006
Austin Wren Hansell placed third amongst all the 2007 International Sigma Tau Delta conference critical papers, earning $75 for her paper “A Conviction of Certainty: Narrative Authority in Jane Austen’s Emma” in Spring 2007
Jameela Dallis won 1st place in Spring 2007 Best Student Essays contest for her paper, "La Papesse, La Mort, et La Tour Abolie"
