English 353/553: Shakespeare
Normally at UNM we teach Shakespeare in two courses, Eng. 32 Early and Eng. 353 Late, but for the London Semester we offer one course covering a wide variety of plays appearing in English productions during the month of July. The calendars of most major English theatres haven’t been published yet, but the six or seven plays selected will include tragedies, comedies, and others from his early and late periods. We’ll read them, analyze them, cover various academic topics in class. And then we’ll see them—at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, at the recreated Shakespeare’s Globe near the site of the original Globe, in the National Theatre, and in experimental houses around London.
Because of the special nature of the course, written work will include journals, response papers, in-class reports, and a written final examination.
(Special note: if you have already had Engish 353 and would like credit instead for English 352, this can be arranged. See the instructor.)
English 487/587: Drama
This course in the genre will also be keyed to productions of plays currently in English theatres. In the classroom, we will analyze language, ideas, styles, and ideas of the theatre in six or seven plays. Then we will test our ideas against different productions in some of the most exciting venues in London. Drama comes alive on stage, and you will have a chance to experience plays from the classic and contemporary repertories, certainly including a handful of new works by the important and rising dramatists of today.
Here too, written work will include journals, response papers, in-class reports, and a
written final examination.
The Schedule
Classes will be held in the morning and early afternoon Monday through Thursday during the four weeks of the London Semester. A lunch break will be included.
This schedule should allow plenty of time for the academic work but many hours during afternoons and evenings as well as long weekends for exploring greater London.
