THE PATRICK J. GALLACHER FUND FOR SCHOLARLY ACHIEVEMENT
IN ENGLISH MEDIEVAL LITERATURE OR STUDIES

The Patrick J. Gallacher Scholarly Achievement Fund was established in 2006 to honor the career of Professor Gallacher during his tenure as Professor of Medieval English in the Department of English at the University of New Mexico. Professor Gallacher received his Ph.D. in English Literature and Comparative Linguistics from the University of Illinois-Urbana, and prior to joining the UNM faculty in 1972 he taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The author or editor of several books, a number of reviews, and numerous cutting-edge articles, Professor Gallacher’s scholarship is marked by a deep interest in medieval aesthetics and interdisciplinarity. He is one of the first scholars to combine medieval medicine and literature in such articles as “Chaucer and the Rhetoric of the Body,” “The Summoner’s Tale and Medieval Attitudes Toward Sickness,” and “Food, Laxatives, and Catharsis in Chaucer’s Nun’s Priest’s Tale.” His book on John Gower, Love, the Word, and Mercury: A Reading of John Gower’s Confessio Amantis, set the standard for mythographic approaches to medieval English literature.

Award : An award of $500.00 will be given to the qualifying alumni or student.

Eligibility for the Award : The Patrick J. Gallacher Scholarly Achievement Fund is designated first for alumni of the Department of English at UNM who have had a concentration or specialization in Medieval Literature at any level and who have produced work that is of outstanding quality and merit in the English medieval period, and second for Ph.D. candidates at the University of New Mexico who have produced a dissertation in Old or Middle English that is marked with distinction.

The definition of outstanding quality and merit shall include but not be restricted to : (1) a book whose topic shall offer a scholarly contribution to the discipline; a work that redirects existing theoretical or scholarly thought on a particular issue; or a new and enhanced edition or translation of a work of essential importance to the discipline; (2) a body of scholarly achievement (in publication and teaching) that marks the applicant as a prominent member of the profession.

The applicant will need three letters of recommendation.

JOSEPH B. ZAVADIL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Joseph B. Zavadil Memorial Scholarhip was established by the
Zavadil family to memorialize and to honor Professor Zavadil's thiry-year
service to the University of New Mexico and to the Department of English,
where he served as Chairman for some ten years. Professor Zavadil received
his BA and MA degress from Loyola University in Chicago and his Ph.D. from
Stanford University in 1961, before joining the UNM faculty in 1962. In
training and teaching, Professor Zavadil's main focus lay in the
interaction between religion and medieval English literature, having
written on Patience and Cleanness: A Study of Doctrinal Relationships and
Literary Purpose
. A beloved teacher devoted to undergraduate teaching
during his tenure at UNM. Professor Zavadil was one of the four designers
of the anthology Western Literature in a World Context and the co-editor
of the first volume of a major work. Medieval Scholarship: History
(Garland, 1995) when he died.

The program is marked specifically for undergraduate study in English
medieval literature, and is thus targeted for undergraduates who have
either a major or a minor in English medieval literature and who have
excelled in their studies and/or service to the Medieval Studies Program
at UNM. Preference will be given to students specializing either in
Arthurian literature, Chaucer, or in comparative medieval literature.

Eligibility for the Award : The student needs a grade point average of 3.5 or over.

OBJECTIVES: The awards are open to applicants in all fields of study, except engineering. Scholars engaged in researching gender issues are encouraged to apply.

ELIGIBILITY
Fellowships are awarded to women who will complete their dissertation writing between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005. There are no restrictions on the location of study, or age of the applicant. Candidates may apply for only one of the awards in the American Fellowships category. Applicants must have completed all course work, passed all required preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposals or plan by Nov. 15, 2004. Students holding any fellowship for writing a dissertation in the year prior to award of this fellowship are not eligible.
