Medieval Studies Graduate Student Annual Internship in Viking Mythology

Annual Deadline October 6th

The Medieval Studies Graduate Program in English offers one student
internship which applies specifically to students who want to work with the
Annual Visiting Scholar in Viking Mythology. Although open to all graduate
students interested in Medieval Studies, first preference will be given to
students in the MA and Ph.D. Concentration Programs as this internship
emphasizes professional development in Medieval Studies.

The student intern works closely with the visiting scholar, taking an active
part in preparing the syllabus, making up examinations,
holding review and study sessions, grading papers and exams, and,
in general, being closely mentored by the Professor of record. This is an
opportunity for students to experience teaching styles and objectives
different from those we follow at UNM and to develop a professional
relationship with a prominent medievalist from another institution.

Among previous visiting scholars the English department has welcomed Professors Marianne Kalinke, Craig Davis, Russell Poole, Lars Lönnroth and Theodore M. Andersson.

This year's visiting scholar will be Professor John McKinnell from Durham
University, England, which for two years running has been acclaimed as
having the top-ranking Department of English in England. Professor
McKinnell is a specialist in Old Norse Language and Literature, with
emphasis on Mythology. His latest book, Meeting the Other in Old Norse Myth
and Legend
, has been well-received by such journals as Speculum. If you wish
to know more about Professor McKinnell, I have his vita on hand for your
perusal, as well as his preliminary syllabus.
