| Wanda Martin and Valerie Thomas, working with Wendy Wintermute of the Centers for Service Learning and with cooperation from United Way of Central New Mexico, conducted an orientation meeting in August for 65 representatives of non-profit organizations seeking to work with a student proposal writer during the fall 2005 semester. They received 45 project ideas in education, the arts, health, and social services. Each student will find potential funders and write a complete proposal for his or her semester project. Three proposals written by students in the spring 2005 class have already been funded for a total of $25,000, and several are still under review. In addition to gaining valuable real-world writing experience, students learn about the important work of non-profits in the community; many choose to continue with their organizations after the proposal-writing course.
