English 499
All English majors and minors, not just those in the Professional Writing concentration, may apply for and complete an Internship as part of their undergraduate work. If you are about to begin or about to complete an internship, or if you have completed an internship during the past two semesters, see Professor Scott Sanders for an add card to the Internship Seminar. For more information, see also the Internship Program page.
The class meets MWF in the first week of classes only. After the first week, we meet one day a week for the next 6 weeks and then again for a couple weeks at the end of the term when students present their internship portfolios. Class time is used to discuss topics of interest to enrolled students and to others (who may visit the class) seeking internships. Seminar topics include reading (and finding) appropriate job ads, writing job applications and resumes, searching the Internet for jobs, building a professional portfolio, and discussion of the problems and successes that attend contemplated, ongoing, or completed internships
Students must attend the scheduled class meetings and must complete two documents: an internship report (about 3 pages) and a professional portfolio. Also, most students give two oral presentations: a brief progress report and a more formal (about 10-15 minutes) final report on their internship or job search. The course is graded credit/no credit, and you may register for one to three credit hours, your choice.
