Information about the Internship

What tasks will the intern perform; what specific/general skills/experience do you seek?

  • Writing for public relations and advertising (news releases, newsletter copy, magazine copy, flyers, invitations, newspaper and radio advertisements.
  • Assistance with media relations (research, writing, pitching and coordination)
  • Web site design and editing (update copy, photos, graphics per assigned schedule; post publications to Web site as available)
  • Desktop publishing and graphic design (tri annual magazine; monthly newsletter; theatrical, musical and athletic programs; print advertisements.
  • Assistance with public relations events.
  • Photography (using school camera, photograph student activities, community service events, performances, etc. as requested)
  • Assistance with all aspects of marketing, public relations, advertising and internal and external communications to support admissions and development for Albuquerque's second oldest independent school.

Internship requirements:

  • Capable writing skills
  • Strong design and desktop publishing skills
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word for Macintosh; experience with Adobe InDesign, PageMaker and/or PhotoShop preferred; QuarkXPress experience a plus
  • Web site design experience (Dreamweaver) also a plus
  • Successful completion of 'Writing for Mass Media' preferred; completion or enrollment in 'Introduction to Public Relations' a plus
  • Self-directed; ability to work with minimal supervision, given sufficient information and direction
  • Strong work ethic; responsible to see projects/tasks through to completion

What specific documents/communication projects will the intern work with and be able to present in a portfolio (or otherwise substantiate) upon completion of the internship?

  • News releases and media alerts
  • Prep Post, Sandia Prep's tri-annual tabloid publication sent to 4,500+ parents, alumni and donors
  • Sandia Prep's Web site, updated weekly
  • Various programs, invitations and other publications
  • Events

How much supervision/mentoring will the intern likely receive or have available?

The intern will receive specific instructions daily, will meet with supervisors weekly, and will be mentored as needed (on an individual basis). Support will be available at any time.

Is the internship paid or a volunteer opportunity? Volunteer

Expected range of hours worked per week (cannot exceed 20) This depends on the intern's interests and needs and whether the internship is being submitted for credit. Typically, we require a minimum commitment of 6 hours and 2 work sessions per week. Most of our interns work 2 to 3 times a week for a total of 7 to 12 hours per week.

Expected duration (normally cannot be less than 4 weeks) one semester
