Information about the Internship

What tasks will the intern perform; what specific/general skills/experience do you seek?

There are library collections of books, maps, documents, microfilms and archives which need to be organized, sorted, labeled, listed and processed for public use. Clerical and computer skills are particularly useful; book repairing and library page work is also valuable. Anyone considering a career in librarianship would gain experience in the technical aspects of the work.

We also teach a curriculum unit to school classes, aimed towards 4th and 5th grade children and we do tours for other groups. We have a print shop with working replicas of early printing presses. The intern would have the opportunity to help organize the collection of books and artifacts, and assist with presentations.

What specific documents/communication projects will the intern work with and be able to present in a portfolio (or otherwise substantiate) upon completion of the internship?

As examples:

Encapsulating and labeling our map collection.
Completing the creation of a holdings inventory for library periodicals.
Creating a database listing for various special collections, such as postcards and directories.
Assist in merging several vertical files, including reconciliation of subject headings.
Indexing of the New Mexico Independent newspaper

How much supervision/mentoring will the intern likely receive or have available?

The professional staff will provide direct training and general guidance on each project assigned to the intern.
