Information about the Internship

What tasks will the intern perform; what specific/general skills/experience do you seek?

We have about 70 projects happening in house at any time so the actual work varies over time. Work includes abstracting, indexing following the ANSI/NISO Z39.18 rules, data conversion, SGML and XML tagging or coding of documents. Writing press releases and articles for publication, writing documentation manuals etc.

What specific documents/communication projects will the intern work with and be able to present in a portfolio (or otherwise substantiate) upon completion of the internship?

Samples of abstracts, indexes, taxonomies (thesauri), samples of indexed records, SGML/SML Tagging, press releases, articles for publications.

How much supervision/mentoring will the intern likely receive or have available?

Internships last 90 days. The first wto weeks are intensive training, then a period of reviewed work, finally they pass the Quality Control tests and work alone directly on client projects.

Is the internship paid or a volunteer opportunity? Paid at $8 per hour

Expected range of hours worked per week (cannot exceed 20) At least 10 hours per week, between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Expected duration (normally cannot be less than 4 weeks) Three months
