Information about the Internship

What tasks will the intern perform; what specific/general skills/experience do you seek?

Student Writer Position:

Generally, third- , fourth-year undergraduate student or a graduate student writer will:

  • assist in the development of a newsletter format
  • write news and feature stories on ethics, government ethics reform, ethics training, organizational leadership and development, etc.
  • perform background research, interviewing, rewriting and proofreading necessary for each article
  • write biographical sketches for publications
  • write other ethics-related articles and/or brochure copy as needed
  • proofread publications as needed

Ideally, the student writer should have knowledge of the Associated Press Stylebook. S/he must be responsible, be able to meet deadlines and be able to present him/herself in a professional manner in person and on the telephone. This is a volunteer position averaging 5-10 hours a week. The student writer will attend regular briefing meetings in the office of the New Mexico Ethics Alliance (on the UNM Campus, Anderson Schools of Management, GSM building, room 234) and may perform the other work as it fits in his/her schedule each week (not necessarily business hours). However, this many hours is not guaranteed as the work fluctuates. The work must be done away from the office on the student’s own computer (e-mail capabilities are helpful). When a student interviews for the position, he or she should bring a current resume and writing samples.
