Sociology 308 Paper #3

Due date: April 29 -- BRING 2 COPIES TO CLASS
Length: 3-5 pages double-spaced
Topic: Your choice!

Options:

1.  Reaction paper to any material covered since March 6, similar to paper #2.  Describe your reactions to an issue raised in the readings or in class and integrate references to readings and/or in-class material in your discussion.  Describe and explain one or more of YOUR CRITICAL EVALUATIONS of the material (don't merely restate the material).  You can say anything you want, as long as you follow the guidelines.

2.  Literary, performance or film analysis.  Either read a book (novel, biography or memoir) or watch a performance or film (fictional, biographical or documentary) that features one or more people facing an issue specifically related to gender.  Briefly describe the issue, the response of the person’s immediate social circle and larger social context, and your own critical response.  Book ideas: Feinberg, Stone Butch Blues; Rodríguez, Always Running; Schlonski, The Last Time I Wore a Dress.  Film ideas: Paris is Burning, Boys Don't Cry, Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, Ma Vie En Rose (My Life in Pink), The Crying Game, Thelma & Louise, The Celluloid Closet, American Beauty.

3.  Ethnography.  Choose an issue related to gender that interests you.  You can either choose something covered in this course or propose a new topic.  It can be something that affects you personally (or not).  Either 1) observe a person or group engaged in gendered behavior, 2) interview an individual about their gender experience, or 3) describe your own gender experience (as specifically related to your chosen topic), and discuss your reactions.

I am open to other ideas.  If you choose an assignment other than option #1, please check with me briefly by Wednesday, April 24 to "OK" your topic.

Guidelines:
1. In the paper, demonstrate that you have thought independently and creatively about the readings, class discussions, videos and/or outside material related to the topic you've chosen.

2. Make one or more specific references to assigned readings or class discussion.

3. As with papers #1 & #2, the paper should be typed and double-spaced with 1-inch margins. Correct spelling and grammar is expected.

4. Also as with previous papers, you must use citations correctly! This means using quotes correctly when using text word-for-word, citing your source when paraphrasing someone else's idea, and in either case, providing the author's name, year published, and if a quote, the page number. You can use any citation style (ASA, APA, MLA), as long as you are consistent. See previous assignments for examples of acceptable ways to cite sources.
