Homework #6 - Due Wed. Nov. 15
Read the article excerpt, "Girls and Boys Together… But Mostly Apart," by Barrie Thorne, assigned for Friday Nov. 10, available on E-Reserves. Answer the following questions. (Legibly handwritten is OK, typewritten is always good.)
1. Briefly describe the theoretical framework in which Thorne locates her study. What are the main ideas from previous studies that she explains as the context for her project? How does she think gender should-- and should not -- be conceptualized? (p. 82)
2. What are Thorne's research questions?
3. Based primarily on the "Methods and Sources of Data" section, what is Thorne's main methodological technique? Based on your textbook and class lecture, define this technique and describe its main purposes (what are researchers' goals in using it?).
4. Thorne uses theoretical sampling. According to Thorne, your textbook, and class lecture, what is theoretical sampling?
5. Identify TWO concepts that Thorne develops based on her qualitative, inductive methodological approach. For each, offer a definition and an example from Thorne's observations/data.
