Homework #8:
Introductory Statistics
Due Wednesday
December 6
For the
"grouped" data in Exhibit 14.10 on Schutt p. 454:
- What measure(s) of central tendency
would be most appropriate, and why?
- What is the median value?
- The mode?
Read South and
Spitze's "Data and Methods" and "Results" (Schutt pp. C-14
to C-25).
- Regarding the authors' sample, what
is its size and from where is it drawn?
- What is the dependent variable?
- What is the key independent (or
"explanatory") variable?
Look at the
descriptive statistics in Table 1 on p. C-17.
- What is the measure of central
tendency reported for the dependent variable, and what is its value for
women and men? What does the difference in these values suggest?
- How many of the women in the sample
were married? How many men were married? (Give your answers in terms of
the number of cases.)
Look at the
regression results in Table 2 on p. C-19.
- Many of the coefficients in the table
are marked with a double asterisk (**), indicating that p < .01. What does this mean?
Based on the bar
charts (Figures 2 and 3) on pp. C-23 and C-24:
- briefly summarize the authors'
findings on gender differences in performance of gender-typed housework
tasks.
