During the next several weeks you will be reading articles that critically examine gender performativity and screening films that depict mainstream as well as marginal depictions of queer people in society. This assignment requires that you screen at least two films, one documentary (Paris is Burning or The Butch Mystique), and one mainstream film (Brokeback Mountain or Imagine Me and You), to examine the way gender is performed within these texts. Questions you should answer: How do traditional gender roles, class and race function to establish the personality, credibility, or integrity of the principal characters in the mainstream film? How do the images in the documentary challenge normative concepts of gender, race or class (pick two) presented in the mainstream film? This paper is to be two (full) pages, double-space, 12 pt. font.
