Women Studies 200
Fall 2003

Extra Credit Paper

Due date:  Tuesday December 16
Length:  3 pages double-spaced
Topic:  Your choice!  Reaction paper to any readings/film assigned for classes Oct. 21 through Nov. 25 (other than something you've already written about in your second paper or final project), OR review of an article, book, film, performance, exhibit, etc. pertaining to women, gender, sexuality or feminism.

The purpose of this paper is for you to describe your reactions to an issue raised in a text (see above), and to integrate references to in-class and outside material in your discussion.  Describe and explain one or more of YOUR REACTIONS to the material.

For a reaction paper, see assignment for Paper #2.  For a review, read an article or book (novel, biography or memoir), watch a film or performance, or view an art exhibit that addresses an issue specifically related to women, gender, feminism and/or sexuality. Briefly describe the issues addressed and provide a critical response.
Film ideas: Mi Vida Loca, Salt of the Earth, History and Memory, Thelma & Louise, The Celluloid Closet, American Beauty, Frida, Southern Comfort, documentaries by Sadie Benning, a Disney film.  These are only suggestions; feel free to write about another film, performance, exhibit, or piece of writing.

BE SURE TO GIVE YOUR OWN CRITICAL EVALUATION OF THE MATERIAL -- DO NOT MERELY SUMMARIZE THE IDEAS PRESENTED IN THE READINGS, FILM, etc.  This paper is worth a maximum of 5 percentage points (half a letter grade for the class).

You can say anything you want, as long as you follow the guidelines.

Guidelines:
1. In the paper, demonstrate that you have thought independently and creatively about the reading, film and/or other material you've chosen.  If you're having trouble getting started, here's a couple examples: a) If several points of view were presented on the issue, which do you find most/least favorable?  Why?  or, b) Do you agree or disagree with the points made in the readings? Why?

2. Make one or more specific references to assigned readings or class discussion from Oct. 21-Nov. 25.

3. The paper should be typed and double-spaced with 1-inch margins.  Correct spelling and grammar is expected.

4. You must use citations correctly!  This means using quotes correctly when using text word-for-word, citing your source
when paraphrasing someone else's idea, and in either case, providing the author's name, year published, and if a quote, the
page number.  You can use any citation style (ASA, APA, MLA), as long as you are consistent.  See paper #1 assignment for examples of acceptable ways to cite sources.
