Degree Programs
Core Requirements
Humanities, social and behavioral sciences, fine arts and second language courses are part of the UNM Core Curriculum are from a listing if elective classes. In the SOE, this totals 6 courses (some specific courses are required by certain departments - please check on all courses before registering).
English (Writing/Speaking) Requirements:
English 101 & 102 or equivalents are required for Degree Programs. Many SOE programs require and specify a third technical writing course. You must take the class that is specified in the Degree Program the student has chosen to pursue.
The Writing Proficiency Portfolio is a program that assesses the writing skills of students by looking at samples of their work. The writing samples are evaluated by members of the English Writing Proficiency Board using standards similar to those used in English 102. To be eligible for the portfolio program, students must have passed English 101 with a grade of B- or better. For more information: http://www.unm.edu/~english/CoreCourses/Portfolio.htm

Mathematics:
Math courses are the foundation for your engineering/computer science courses. A reliable measure of your future success in engineering/computer science is your performance/success in mathematics. Students who earn grades of “B” or better in preparatory mathematics are good candidates for the study of engineering/computer science.
We strongly recommend that a student take the Math Placement Test at the UNM Testing Center if your last university-level math class was more than two years ago AND if you have not completed the equivalent of Engineering Calculus I (Math 162). For more information: http://test.unm.edu
The engineering/computer science Math Sequence in preparation for Calculus I (Math 162) is as follows:
Math 120 Intermediate Algebra
Math 121 College Algebra
Math 123 Trigonometry
Math 150 Pre-Calculus
