Ethics Fellows Pilot Program

University of New Mexico

2007-2008

Due to the generous support of the National Science Foundation (NSF), faculty from Philosophy and Engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM) are pleased to announce the Ethics Fellows Pilot Program for 2007-2008.  This program is intended to motivate interdisciplinary cooperation among UNM graduate students in Philosophy and Engineering and enhance the classroom experience for undergraduates in Engineering at the University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College (CNM).

The main goal of this program is to train UNM graduate students from Philosophy and Engineering to co-teach the 1-credit hour undergraduate course ECE/ME/CE 409: Engineering Ethics.  Under this program, two sections of ECE/ME/CE 409 will be taught by one Ethics Fellow from Philosophy and another from Engineering.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Deadline: 15 November 2007

[Printable Version (pdf)]

We encourage graduate students from Philosophy and Engineering who have a genuine interest in teaching undergraduates and working with colleagues from different disciplines to apply for a position in the Ethics Fellows Pilot Program.

* RESPONSIBILITIES

Each graduate student selected as an Ethics Fellow will be involved in the program from January 2008 until October 2008.

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES

During the spring 2008 semester, all Ethics Fellows will be involved in the 8-week section of ECE/ME/CE 409 that will be taught by Professor Jerry Hall of Civil Engineering.  The course is being offered MWF 9-9:50am; it will begin on Wednesday 16 January and end on 14 March.  Each week Professor Hall will deliver lectures on Monday, and then one team of Ethics Fellows will lead discussion on Wednesday and the other team will lead discussion on Friday.  All Ethics Fellows will therefore be responsible for attending Professor Hall’s lectures, preparing for and running 7 discussion sections with his/her teaching partner, and grading student work.  To view the course outline used by Professor Hall in Fall 2007, click here.

After the spring 2008 semester, each Ethics Fellow will be co-teaching a section of ECE/ME/CE 409 either at UNM during summer 2008 or at CNM during the fall 2008 semester.  The summer 2008 section of ECE/ME/CE 409 will likely be offered as a 4-week course at UNM from 9 June to 4 July.  The fall 2008 section will be offered as an 8-week course at CNM from 2 September to 24 October.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to teaching responsibilities, all graduate students accepted into the Ethics Fellows program will be required to attend two teaching seminars, one during the week of 14 January 2008 and the other during the week of 19 May 2008.  These seminars will meet 2 or 3 times during designated weeks.  Ethics Fellows will also be required to attend two talks that will be delivered by external speakers with experience teaching engineering ethics.  These talks will be held during the second half of the spring 2008 semester.

Ethics Fellows will also be required to meet with supervising faculty during the semester they are teaching ECE/ME/CE 409 as well as complete teaching observations of other Ethics Fellows who are teaching ECE/ME/CE 409.  Finally, all Ethics Fellows will be involved in research that will help us improve how ECE/ME/CE 409 is taught at UNM and CNM and will be asked to offer regular feedback on their experience co-teaching ECE/ME/CE 409.

* COMPENSATION

Graduate students accepted into the Ethics Fellows program will be compensated $6,900 ($2,300 for work completed during the spring 2008 semester and an additional $4,600 for co-teaching a section of ECE/ME/CE 409 either during the summer 2008 or fall 2008 semester).  This compensation does not include tuition and is intended to supplement what graduate students receive from being an RA on a grant or a TA in their home department.  The stipend will be paid in installments over the duration of the Ethics Fellows program.

* APPLICATION DEADLINE

All application materials must be received by Thursday 15 November 2007 to ensure consideration.  Applicants who are ABD and have additional funding that will cover tuition will be given preference.  Selection decisions will be made by early December.
