The Department of Media Arts at the University of New Mexico, College of Fine Arts, invites applications for a tenure-trackassistant professorship in film and digital media history, criticism, and theory.

Rank and Salary/ Start date: Assistant Professor, tenure track. $40, 000 to $42,000, depending upon experience. August 15, 2005.

Responsibilities: Our successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses in general moving image arts, including offerings at the undergraduate and graduate level. Such a scholar will have the opportunity to develop the Department’s curriculum in the context of culture, art, and science studies.

Minimum qualifications: Ph.D by August 2006 in Cinema/Media Studies or in a related interdisciplinary field. The person filling the position must have a comprehensive background in—and be able to engage—contemporary criticism, theory, and cultural studies vis-à-vis cinema.

Preferred Qualifications: Publications or dissertation focused upon the intersections of science and cinema. Ability to offer specialized courses that engage life sciences or information sciences in context of film and media studies. University teaching experience. Demonstrated engagement with the interlocking diversities represented in media arts; understanding of the political and material structures that inform visual/aural aesthetics; expertise in articulating formalist critiques.

Application Process: Evidence of teaching excellence and innovative scholarship should take the form of sample course syllabi (up to three); student evaluations of teaching (concise format); at least three confidential letters of recommendation (not to exceed four; may be sent with application, sealed by recommender, or mailed under separate cover to arrive by Jan. 17, 2005); and a sample of published work, or excerpts from the dissertation (30-40 pages max). The Department of Media Arts, a relatively new degree program in the College of Fine Arts, offers the Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts. We serve seventy-some majors and untold numbers of minors, as well as more than 1,500 students per year, through general and specialized courses in film/video history, criticism, and production. Our diverse faculty supports a diverse student body, where among other distinctions, a balanced ethnic representation is sustained by students of color and white students who work together in equal ratios.

The University of New Mexico is located at an altitude of 5,200 feet in Albuquerque, near the center of our state. A city of 600,000 at the base of the Sandia Mountains in the Rio Grande Valley, Albuquerque has much to recommend (it): its many peoples enrich the geographically stunning landscape in terms of their histories, arts and sciences, languages, and cultural values.
